I chose Aldgate as a starting point for a walking tour to look at the many different kinds of places that are linked by views of the Swiss Re "Gherkin" tower. One glimpses the Gherkin from many surprising angles and from many different environments. Wherever you can see the Gherkin from, it seems to be designed to contrast with your surroundings. Petticoat Lane, Brick Lane, Leadenhall St, ancient churches and modern offices, all offer a context in which the view of the Gherkin is intrusive, but not opressive. Mine are the first 12 below.
