The name describes the method used to dispose of the soil dug out from the nearby Millwall Docks: it was loaded on to the newly-invented mechanical chute and dumped on nearby wasteland. This is now allotments and the Mudchute City Farm, adjoining Millwall Park and Island Gardens. What was once noisy and dirty with imports and exports through the docks and processing industries is now a quiet residential area surrounding the docks and the green areas. To the few remaining Victorian terraces have been added 1920s semi-detached cottages (some part of an ambitious council housing programme, some rather more upmarket housing for supervisors and managers), a lot of postwar council housing and 1980s 'luxury' flats. As you leave the station, the views of greenery, the occasional cow and the classical buildings of maritime Greenwich belie the unromantic name.
