Describe Stonebridge Park here.
March 2005: First recorded in 1745 a stonebridge marked the spot where Harrow Road crossed the River Brent (according to Cyril M. Harris) giving this area it's name. According to Ed Glinert, in 1963 the Great Train Robbers found the train they had decided to rob here, which helped them in planning for the real robbery. The station also makes an appearance in the Ealing comedy "The Man in the White Suite"...and now is also one of the
Europan 8 sites (Architectural competition).
I found the area very interesting, despite its gray and grim feel. Walking out of the station you are confronted by the North Circular. Gray 60's towerblocks in the background (which despite their commonly perceived uglyness I have grown to find fascinating). Stonebridge also has a powerplant, with two smokestacks, which are very visible in the area. And yet, in the middle of all this grayness there is one of the most intricate and elaborate buildings in London - the
Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, a Hindu Temple. (Astrid)
June 2006: The Stonebridge Estate is going through a facelift in which most of the towerblocks are being demolished and being replaced with new houses etc, on the downside what green space there was is being built on.
